The Element Magnesium

Magnesium is found in large deposits of magnetite, dolomite, minerals and mineral waters in which magnesium ions are soluble. Magnesium in biology includes magnesium ions which are essential to the basic nucleic acids in the body. Many enzymes require magnesium to be present in order to support catalytic action, while magnesium makes for a healthy component of human diet.

Industrial uses of magnesium include its usage as a structural metal, used as engine components such as engine blocks in vehicles (e.g. Porsche, Volkswagen and BMW), in electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptop computers and cameras. It is noteworthy to remember that magnesium has been used as aerospace construction metals during World War I. Other uses of magnesium include removal of sulphur from iron and steel and production of titanium.
