In its common elemental form, chlorine is a green gas of about 2.5 times density than the air we breathe. It has a clearly distinguishable odor and is known to be poisonous to our respiratory system. It is also known as a strong oxidizer which reacts with flammable material.

Its primary use is in purification of water such as in swimming pools. Other useful industrial applications of chlorine include making plastics, solvents for dry cleaning and for metal degreasing. It is also be known to be helpful in pharmaceuticals, insecticides, and agrochemicals. The military makes use of chlorine in making chlorine bombs which are thought to be lethal.
