The Element Chromium


Chromium is mined as chromites ore and is commercially produced by heating the ore in the presence of aluminum or silicon.

Its common uses include usage as an alloy to make stainless steel cutlery, chrome plating and in the process of turning the surface of aluminum in to ruby. Chromium is also widely used in manufacturing dyes and paints. In chemical format, it is used as a catalyst and chromites is used to make moulds for the firing bricks. It is the chromium salts that are widely used in tanning of leather while another form of chromium (Cr(CO)6) is used as a gasoline additive.
