The Element Cobalt

Cobalt is famous as a ferromagnetic metal which is silver and/or grey in color. Although pure cobalt does not occur in nature, its compounds can be found quite easily in rocks, soil, water, plants and animals. Industrially cobalt is not mined alone; it is usually as a by product of nickel and copper mining activities that cobalt is produced.

Biologically, a small amount of cobalt is essential to most living beings including humans as it consist a central component of the vitamin B12. Commercially used cobalt is useful in alloys such as super alloys in turbine aircraft engines, corrosion-free alloys, high speed steels, in magnets and magnetic recording media and as a catalyst for petroleum and chemical industries.
