Germanium boasts of having the same crystal structure of diamond with hard, grayish-white outlook and a metallic luster. It is renowned as a semi conductor and has been used widely in electronics industry. In its pure state, the metalloid is crystalline, brittle and retains its luster in air at room temperature. It is one of the rare substances along with silicon and bismuth that expands as it solidifies from its molten state.

The main use of germanium is as a replacement for silica in the stationary phase in chromatography. Germanium transistors are used by some musicians to reproduce the ‘fuzz-tone’ from the early rock and roll era. It is also vital in the process of cutting and polishing infrared optical materials in to lenses and windows. A particularly interesting fact about germanium is that certain of its components have a low mammalian toxicity and clear activity against certain bacteria thus, making it helpful as a chemotherapeutic agent.
