The Element Arsenic


Arsenic is very much similar to phosphorus and form colorless, odorless, crystalline oxides which are hygroscopic and readily soluble in water. Arsenic (V) acid however, is known as a weak acid. Arsenopyrite or mispickel as it is officially called is the most common arsenic bearing mineral which sublimes in to arsenic (III) oxide leaving iron oxides when roasted in air.

In 2005, china had been named as world’s top producer of arsenic which amounts up to more than 50% of the share. It should be noted that arsenic and many of its components are highly poisonous and for this reason, it has been widely used in insecticides and wood treatment with chromated copper arsenate.
