The Element Strontium


Strontium does not occur in nature in its elementary form due to its high reactivity to air. Instead, it can be found as compounds in minerals such as strontianite and celestite. It is said to be softer than calcium and decomposes water more readily. Freshly cut strontium will appear silvery but will soon turn in to a yellowish color due to oxidization.

Its main uses include being an active ingredient in Metastron, a radiopharmaceutical used for bone pain secondary to metastatic prostate cancer, a power source for radioisotope thermoelectric generators, in cancer therapy and as a constituent of AJ62 alloy, a durable magnesium alloy used in car and motorcycle engines by BMW.
