The Element Xenon

Xenon is considered as a trace gas in Earth’s atmosphere and is also found in gases emitted from mineral springs. Xenon is commercially produced as a by-product of separation of air in to oxygen and nitrogen. After the separation process is completed, liquid oxygen will contain small amount of Xenon. By performing further fractional distillation, xenon can be extracted. Production of a liter of Xenon from the atmosphere requires 220 watt-hours of energy and therefore, it is an expensive gas.

Xenon is widely used for Gas-discharge lamps, production of lasers, giving general anesthesia, and medical imaging.
