The Element Caesium


Caesium has a melting point of 28 Celsius or 83 Fahrenheit which make this element is one of the five metals that are liquids at or near room temperature. Caesium was first discovered in the mineral water in 1860 in Germany and the first Caesium metal was experimentally produced 22 years later. One of the most significant and rich sources of Caesium is at Beric Lake in Manitoba.

Caesium is widely used as a drilling fluid for the oil industry. The other most important use of Caesium is for atomic clocks which are accurate to seconds over many thousand years. Since 1967, the unit of time, the second is defined using the properties of Caesium.
