Samarium is one of the rare earth metals which is reasonably stable in the air. This metal can never be found free in the nature and like other rare earth metals, this is included in many minerals including monazite, bastnasite, and samarskite. Former two minerals are used as the commercial sources of this element. Ion exchange process is used for extraction of Samarium when commercially produced.

Samarium is widely used for lighting equipments used in movie industry together with other rare earth metals. Samarium is also used as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. This element can be found the headphone you wear for listening to your favorite songs!
