The Element Flourine


Fluorine is an extremely reactive element which can only be prepared from other compounds electrolytically. It was first discovered in the form of fluorspar or calcium fluoride, during 1530’s.

The first large scale production of fluorine was needed during the period of World War II to compliment atomic bomb Manhattan project. Fluorine is an element with a lot of chemical and industrial uses such as semi conductor manufacturing, flat panel display production, production of pure uranium, insecticide in the form of sodium fluoride, application of anti-reflective coatings and diachronic mirrors in the form of potassium fluoride and cryolite. The most widely used medical implication of fluoride is its usage in toothpastes to prevent dental cavities.
