The Element Uranium


Uranium is an important element when it comes to its radioactive properties. It is a silvery grey metallic chemical element belonging to actinide series of the periodic table. Uranium is also special in that it has the highest atomic weight out of all naturally occurring elements. While it can be easily found in low levels within all rock, soil, and water, the worldwide production of uranium amounted up to 41,429 tonnes in 2003 out of which 25% mining was done in Canada.

Common uses of uranium are as follows; as a nuclear fuel, synthesis of isotopes, X-ray targets for production of high-energy X-rays and as nuclear explosive.

Significant volumes of Uranium usage over the past several years comes from decommissioned Soviet warheads. Commonly used as fuel in nuclear power plants, this is truly turning "swords into plowshares."
